MARINE HOTEL JETTY - History
MARINE HOTEL PIER:
In 1840, Lingham opened the Marine Hotel in competition to Liardet's Pier Hotel at Port Melbourne (Lewis 1983:16). Hoddle's 1842 plan shows the Marine Hotel in the west side of Nott St on the Bay St foreshore, a block away from the Pier Hotel and Liardet's Jetty, with a small jetty directly in front of the pier.
INGLES, ADAMS & GRESHAM PIER:
Another pier belonging to "Ingles, Adams and Gresham", is shown in the same location in 1858(Ross) with 13 ft water maximum at its extremity. The pier remained in this location until at least 1894 (Cox), when it is shown with a square platform at the end. No further information was found for this structure, and it is unclear when it was removed.
MARINE HOTEL JETTY - Interpretation of Site
Taylor (pers comm) has indicated that he has seen timber piles and numerous bottles in this area around the late 1980's. The site is very significant given its age and importance in the founding years of colony, and should be considered for the Heritage Register.
