Statement of Significance
The Former Commercial Bank, Yarra Glen, built in 1886 is architecturally significant at a regional level as an unusual bank design that resembles a residence rather than a traditional bank building. There is no other known bank building similar in design in Victoria. The building was constructed for the prominent local businessman William C Farrell to attract as a tenant the Commerical Bank, the largest bank in Victoria in the 1880s.
It is historically significant as a reminder of a period when the Yarra Glen district was growing rapidly in the 1880s.
Classified: 10/06/1992`
