Statement of Significance
The Victoria Tannery is historically significant as the first large scale boot factory in Victoria and a rare example of the integration of tanning and boot manufacture on the one site. It is also historically significant for the association with Hugh Thompson, a major figure in the Victorian boot industry. It is of importance as one of the last remaining buildings connected with the tanning industry in the inner suburbs. The firm is notable for its continuous operation on the one site over an extended period of more than 80 years, surviving two depressions in what was traditionally a very turbulent industry. The surviving building is of a utilitarian character and is understood to be part of the boot manufacturing section and the adjoining vacant land may have archaelogical remains of the tanning pits.
