This Moreton Bay Fig (Ficus macrophylla) is one of the 'signature trees' from the formative years of gardens in Victoria. It has a truly outstanding display of aerial roots to an extent rarely seen in cultivation and which may well be unique in Victoria. It displays its 'strangler' or 'banyan' origins in a manner rarely seen outside its subtropical rainforest habitat.
The tree shares a long and continuous history with the site, itself closely aligned with the passing of the Education Act in 1872 and the subsequent expansion of religious education in the State.
