Statement of Significance
The Champagne Cellars - a network of underground barrel vaulted 'drives' were cut out from decomposed granite between 1868-70 by Joseph Best. The drives were extended by miners under the direction of Hans Irvine, a celebrated business man who bought the vineyard in 1888. The house of Seppelt have also extended them subsequently. The tunnels have been opened by various distinguished guests, including Lord Hopetoun, Dame Nellie Melba and various Governors of Victoria. For interesting architectural construction and historical interest.
