Statement of Significance
The Former Office of Warden of Goldfields is a rectangular, timber structure prefabricated in Victoria c.1857 and first used by the Warden. The structure is reputed to have been moved four times after its initial erection, serving largely Colonial Government uses. Horizontal timber panels infill between vertical framing members, being wider under the decorated gabled ends. The roof is iron and windows are multi-pane sashes.
Former Office of Warden of Goldfields was originally located at Campbell Street, Ararat. It is a unique surviving example of prefabricated structure designed to be portable and to serve the needs for Colonial Government Offices, particularly for the police and in association with the goldfields. The structure is architecturally important for its panelised constuction, the only other known surviving example of which is La Trobe's cottage. This building has historical associations with the goldfields and its various relocations.
The Former Office of Warden of Goldfields has been used as a residence and was moved to its present location at the Cardigan State School in 1993.
