Statement of Significance
The rectangular bluestone walled cottage has a high pitched slate gable roof, with casement windows, rusticated stone quoins and massive chimneys. This simple styled, but solidly constructed cottage is of major importance and forms an important feature.
The setting is unusual in Portland where all the early structures are classical in their stylistic derivation.
The Botanic Gardens in Portland were set out in 1857 by Mr Elliot. The northern half of the bluestone cottage was built for the first curator, Mr William Allitt. The southern rooms were added in the 1890s. The cottage has been restored and furnished in period furniture.
