Statement of Significance
The two storey bluestone residence was erected in 1873 for Dr Charles Grier, a former Surgeon Superintendent on British immigrant ships who set up a medical practice in December 1862. This fine axed ashlar basalt structure is a late colonial Georgian style building with traditional casement sashes, modest string course and restrained parapet entablature.
Dr Grier's residence is a conservative and extremely late example of the colonial Georgian style in Victoria, and one which is more characteristic of the building traditions of the 1850s in Portland. Dr Charles Grier, a licentiate of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, administered to townsfolk of the infant Portland settlement from 1852-1883 and is consequently an important figure in the social history of this district.
No 70 Julia Street, Portland is largely intact externally. The interior has not been inspected.
