Statement of Significance
A simple brick homestead of 1856, in unusually intact condition, with a verandah on all four sides. The original shingles are now under the later iron roof. It was apparently built for William Atkinson, who held Ballan at that time and subsequently owned by the Hon. E J Hogan, M.L.A., Premier of Victoria.
Two sketches of Carween Homestead drawn by Emma Von Steiglitz in July and October 1859, have survived. Although adjacent to the Ballarat freeway the environment of the homestead, with its view to the Werribee River, is larely intact.
