BOUNDY'S HOTEL SITE - History
Heritage Inventory History of Site: Boundy's Hotel appears on maps from the early 1850s. J. Boundy purchased several allotments in the area during the land sales of 1852-53. J. Boundy, R. Braithewaite and R. Tucker purchased the hotel site on 27/1/1853. A toll bar was shown on the Mt Alexander road at this spot on a map in 1853, as well as two other unidentified buildings which appear to correspond to the hotel and the stables. The hotel appeared on Thomas Turner's goldfield's map of 1861, but it is not on the 1870 goldfield's map of the area. It is not known when the hotel ceased to operate. The toll bar, operated by the Borough of Taradale, closed in 1877. The site of the Lone Star Mining Company, which operated during the 1860s, was opposite the hotel. The hotel presumably catered to the mineworkers and the travellers along Mt Alexander Road. The hotel was probably situated to take advantage of traffic stopping at the toll bar. The property has subsequently been used for farming pursuits.Heritage Inventory Description
BOUNDY'S HOTEL SITE - Heritage Inventory Description
There is an extant, and occupied, weatherboard house on the site of the former hotel, which has been demolished. Bricks from the hotel appear to have been used in paving and garden construction. There is cobbled paving and a large timber barn to the north of the house. The former stables are of bush pole construction, with a bluestone cobbled floor, drains and a threshold incorporated into the barn. Well preserved post and rail yards are to the north of the stable. There are two brick and timber structures, of uncertain function, behind the house. Split rail sheepyards, in a ruined condition, and a sheep dip are to the south of the house. Scattered artefacts can be found around the house.
Heritage Inventory Significance: High archaeological significance (9). Despite the apparent loss of the hotel structure itself, this site retains many significant features and there may be significant in situ archaeological deposits. The site has a high regional historical significance as one of the earliest hotels on the Mt Alexander Road during the gold rush. It is also significant for having been the location of a toll bar. The name Boundy is still recalled in the district.
