BALLARAT COMPANY MINE SITE - History
Heritage Inventory History of Site: The site is located on Allotment 54 of the Parish of Edgecombe and first purchased by F.G. Dalgety on 29/3/1853. A mining lease was taken up on this land by the Ballarat Company during the mid 1860s. The report of the Mining Surveyor of December 1864 stated that "The Ballarat Company on this lead (the Scorpion Lead) have not yet struck auriferous earth, or at least so as to work it, but are persevering with many difficulties." In March 1865 it was reported that the "Ballarat Company ... has met with a lead, supposed to be identical with the famous Scorpion Lead, now being so efficiently worked, with a prospect of 1 dwt to the bucket." In June 1867 the adjoining London and Melbourne Company (site H7723-0431) purchased the Ballarat claim. However, the Cambrian Company appears also to have worked this land as the Geological Survey of Victoria Quarter Sheet No. 9 (2nd edition) located the Cambrian Company at this site. The Company appears to have operated during the mid 1860s. The lease was subsequently taken over by the Sir James McCulloch Gold Mining Company in 1870.
