SOUTH MELBOURNE GASWORKS - History
The gasworks was constructed in 1872-3, under Henry Courtis, providing gas to Emerald Hill and Sandridge on 22 March 1873. By the end of the year, the gasworks was approved to supply gas within a 8 mile radius of Princes Bridge. The gasworks ceased operations in 1931 until 1935, and was in operation until 1956, however the ancillary workshop buildings continued to operate until the late 20th century. The gasworks comprised many buildings, with the Retort House being the most substantial structure, with a chimney nearly 90ft high.
While many structures remain, some were demolished in the mid-late 20th century. The boundary walls to the west and east are historic, the wall to the south was constructed sometime after 1963.
A range of structures, features, landform modifications and deposits are potentially evidenced in the archaeological record, including: the structural remains of the former gas ‘retort building’ and ‘elevated tramway’, industrial yard areas, and archaeological
deposits associated with activities occurring within identified structures and exterior spaces.Heritage Inventory Description
