Statement of Significance
REVISED STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE (with AHC criteria):
The Dwelling at 50 Arthur Street, Eltham is significant to Nillumbik Shire:
- as a good example from a small group of dwellings constructed in European medieval revival styles in Eltham after the Second World War, a stylistic theme so strongly identified with the former Shire since the construction of Montsalvat (from 1934) (Criterion B2);
- for its illustration of a significant component of the former Shire of Eltham's cultural heritage, the 'Eltharn Style examples being marked by their design variety, their often unusual construction, and many being owner built (Criterion 02);
REVISED ELTHAM STUDY EXTENT OF DESIGNATION:
BUILDING AND LAND WITHIN THE TITLE TO A RADIUS OF 30 METRES, with emphasis on fabric from the 1960s.

Dwelling - 50 Arthur Street, Eltham - Physical Description 1
REVISED OR EXTENDED DESCRIPTON:
The house has two floor levels plus an attic set within a steeply gabled roof form aided by dormer windows: it is Old English or Tudor revival in style. The wall cladding is sheet and cover strap in a half-timbered mode, a rising sun motif in the gable and projecting windows bays set out on strutted sills to form a picturesque effect. Some windows have multi-paned upper sashes, typical of the Edwardian-era (recycled?).
Recycling of building materials along with a nostalgia for the lost fabric of major heritage structures, was a trend associated with both the former Eltham Shire, as well as the wider metropolis in the 1960s. For example, this was the advent of the Whelan the Wreckers yard as a Mecca for the new wave of house and materials recyclers that emerged after the New Order destruction of many things old in the 1950's.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
