Statement of Significance
The following wording is from the John Patrick Landscape Citation, 1998 for the property. Please note that this is a "Landscape Citation", not a "Statement of Significance". For further information refer to theLandscape Citation held by the City of Yarra.
Landscape Citation, 1998
Description
An extensive row of mature street trees along Victoria Parade, forming a notable avenue. The median straddles both the City of Yarra and the City of Melbourne, so only the northern side of the median and the trees located there fall within the brief for this study.
Remnant Fabric (Man Made)
A tramline runs along the centre of the thoroughfare, effectively forming the municipal boundary.
Remnant Fabric (Vegetation)
Victoria Parde is dominanted by mature Dutch Elm (Ulmus x hollandica) which form a striking and powerful statement in the landscape, contributing greatly to the character of the area, and to the region generally. The row is fairly continuous, with one notable gap near the intersection of Brunswick Street, The trees have been allowed to grow virtually unhindered along the length of the avenue thoug some of the lower branches have been poorly pruned (lopped) to avoid contact with trucks or trams. The area beneath the trees is covered in turf.
Statement of Significance
The Victoria Street median is of significance as an outstanding example of Victorian avenue planting. The avenue is of significance for its continuity, and as an example of grandeur attained by allowing Dutch Elms to assume their natural growth habit. The avenue forms one of a number of such plantings that impart great character to Melbourne, especially forming a cultural icon.
