COMET MILL - History
Heritage Inventory History of Site: The Comet Sawmill was erected by R.A. Robertson in 1884. The Wandong Timber Company owned the mill from 1885 to 1889 and then, from 1892, to the Australian Seasoned Timber Company. The mill was burnt in 1889 but was rebuilt on the same site. It was again destroyed by fire in 1899, reopening in 1900. The Comet Sawmill finally closed in September 1902 and the plant was removed to Western Australia. This was the largest hardwood sawmill in the district and perhaps, according to the "Kilmore Advertiser" (13 January, 1894) the largest in Australia.Heritage Inventory Description
COMET MILL - Heritage Inventory Description
Large timber mill complex. The site contains brick and concrete foundations along with earthworks and several timber structures, many bolts and other small fittings are in situ. The excavations for saw machinery survive well as do 2 large sawdust heaps. A large excavation to the north may be a later mill site. A tramway runs across the site. The sites of a boarding house and other huts are evident from bricks and domestic rubbish.
Heritage Inventory Significance: State. This was a very large and very early sawmill and features remain from all parts of the mill.
