Statement of Significance
The Great Western Lead features a little disturbed narrow band of intensive shafts and mounds along a Tertiary gravel high lead and provides evidence of small scale mining following a rush of mainly Chinese miners in 1862.
The Great Western Lead is historically and scientifically important at a LOCAL level as a substantially intact example of an important gold mining technique. Gold mining sites are of crucial importance for the pivotal role they have played since 1851 in the development of Victoria. Overall the Great Western Lead is of LOCAL significance.

Great Western Lead - Historic Mining Reserve, between Ruthvens Access Road and Western Highway, GREAT WESTERN - Physical Description 1
Sinkings - Narrow band of intensive sinkings (shafts and small mounds) along an old cement lead. Very scrubby but workings are undisturbed and do provide an appreciation of the nature of this type of mining.
No visible artefacts appear.
There is good integrity in the condition of the features. Some quarrying has occurred of small mullock heaps, but the bulk of the diggings are undisturbed.
