STATE MILL - History
Heritage Inventory History of Site: The Forests Commission of Victoria estanblished the first state mill when it purchased the Nayook Sawmilling Company in 1918. This one opened a few years later. The sawmill operated until 1939 and was thereafter used by a lone and reclusive man, Sid Bennett. He died in the early 1960s and, in recent years the huts have been partially modernised and used by Scout groups.Heritage Inventory Description
STATE MILL - Heritage Inventory Description
Former timber mill site. The site may be well preserved but is almost entirely obscured by sword grass, bracken and blackberries. This area has some machine pits and construction timbers visible in an area c.50x30m. 3 huts survive the main one being modernised and now used by a scouting group. Tramway formations are visible in some sections. Small fittings were seen in and near the huts including bogey wheels, rails, pulleys, bearing blocks and scrap metal. A photograph in the hut used by the Scouts indicated that a fourth building, now demolished, stood beside the main hut.
Heritage Inventory Significance: State. First state owned sawmill in Victoria.
