WOLFRAM MINE - History
Heritage Inventory History of Site: Wolfram (iron tungstate) was discovered near Marysville in 1901 and one third of a ton of wolfram was gained from Quartz Creek in 1908. In 1912 veins of the ore were discovered at the head of what is now Wolfram Creek, a tributary of Wilks Creek. The mine was held by Sherman Gates and Charles Kirwin in 1917 when a boiler, a 25 hp engine and crushing equipment were installed. Water power was also used at the mine. The mine closed in 1919. Most of the plant remained until 1940, when the mine was reopened and worked using a large oil engine. The mine finally closed in 1943.Source: Evans P., "Site Reports, Marysville Area", 1989, CFL.Heritage Inventory Description
WOLFRAM MINE - Heritage Inventory Description
Two adits and one open cut area remain. Both adits can be entered and are connected by a short tramway. The remains of a small battery are located in the creek bed south of the road and the remains of a large boiler are to the north of the road. There are the remains of three small huts near the junction of the mine road with Wilks Creek Road. An earlier CFL survey also noted the remains of a sluice, wooden truck and the foundations of an elevated chute.
Heritage Inventory Significance: Regional. Wolfram is a scarce mineral in Victoria.
