CLARKE & PEARCE NO.4 & 5 MILLS - History
Heritage Inventory History of Site: This was the only mill in the Rubicon forest to survive the 1939 fire, and some huts also escaped the blaze.The mills were established on the oppposite sides of the Royston River in 1937 and 1931 respectively, and operated in tandemby the most successful and long lived timber company in the Rubicon Forest. The last remaining tramway in the Rubicon Forest served this and No.5 mill.Heritage Inventory Description
CLARKE & PEARCE NO.4 & 5 MILLS - Heritage Inventory Description
The Clark and Pearce Nos 4 & 5 Mills feature extensive remains relating to most aspects of sawmilling and timber transport. The No.4 mill features an intact winch boiler, engine and flywheel, along with remnant mill foundations and a fire refuge dugout. The No.5 mill features extensive settlement debris, including several standing and numerous collapsed huts, a square iron water tank, remains of the mill shed, a huge sawdust heap and an intact outlet railway tramway formation.Two groups of huts in poor condition, one used by a horse riding club, the other by four wheel drivers.
Heritage Inventory Significance: State. Features from most aspects of the sawmill and associated settlement survive and date from before the 1939 fires.
