BARNEWALL & LEE'S LOWERING GEAR - History
Heritage Inventory History of Site: The incline lowering gear and tramline were constructed in 19933-34 to facilitate the transfer of timber from sawmills on Snobs Creek, over the range to the terminus of the steel tramway at Rubicon for transport to Alexandra. Salvage of fire-killed timber in the area after 1939 resulted in a bottle-neck, forcing the construction of a road up the Snobs Creek valley and the closure of the tramway and lowering gear by 1944. Michael Lee was responsible for constructing the tramway system. Reginald John (later Sir Reginald) Barnewall amalgamated his interest with Clark & Pearce in 1938 to form Ruoak Timbers the largest and most successful timber business in the region.
BARNEWALL & LEE'S LOWERING GEAR - Interpretation of Site
Heritage Inventory Interpretation: The site lies at the terminus of a timber tramway which linked sawmills in Snobs Creek to the steel tramway to Alexandra at Rubicon. The incline down which the loaded timber bogies travelled was very steep (average grade 1:3, ruling grade 1:2.25) with the lowering gear acting as a control and break over the movement of trucks.
