VIC OAK SAWMILLING COMPANY - History
Heritage Inventory History of Site: The Vic Oak Sawmill was established in 1934. Timber was cut from the southern fall of Mt Margaret and a 3' gauge tramway was constructed along the northern bank of the river to transport the logs to the mill. The tramway was worked by horses. A lowering gear and balanced incline was installed on the slopes of Mt Margaret, and a horse operated tramway reached towards the mount. The tramway system was destroyed in 1939, but was rebuilt. Another tramway was built in a south west direction, near Lady Talbot Drive. Financial difficulties forced the sale of the mill to the Australian Broom Company in 1945, which replaced the tramways with motor trucks the following year. The company changed hands several times thereafter, and closed in 1970
VIC OAK SAWMILLING COMPANY - Interpretation of Site
