COALVILLE - History
Heritage Inventory History of Site: Caolville was once the largest town in Narracan Shire. The discovery of black coal in the area, followed by the building of the Moe-Thorpedale railway was the stimulus for settlement on this section of the narracan Creek in 1886. By 1890, Coalville had a population of 300, with a railway station, stores, hotels, boarding house, cricket and football teams. When a formal survey of the town was attempted in 1890, many problems arose due to the leases of the mining companies and the haphazard settlement along the creek. Some hut dwellers were forcibly evicted. The town's fortunes fluctuated with those of the coal mines - always marginal and dependent on the demands of the railways for coal. By 1920 there was little mining activity. Dairying helped to sustain the settlement.Heritage Inventory Description
