NEW CHUM MINE, DRY CREEK - History
Heritage Inventory History of Site: The New Chum Company erected their first lot of crushing machinery on dry Creek early in 1867. The results were not encouraging and in the following year they acquired the Smile of Fortune machinery and re-erected it at their site on Dry Creek. It is almost certainly this is the machinery which is at the site now, as each piece is evidently of very early construction. The adits on the opposite side of the spur, and the associated machinery site, were constructed in 1903. Approximately 1 100 ounces of gold was obtained from about 4 000 tons of stone.Source: Milner (October 1989) 89/39Heritage Inventory Description
NEW CHUM MINE, DRY CREEK - Heritage Inventory Description
The mine essentially consists of four adits driven in a north easterly-direction into the northern slope of the gully which runs south in to Dry Creek. The machinery site is nearby, to the south-east. The two are connected with a level quartz track which terminates near the roasting kilns. The site contains: a low pressure Cornish boiler; a 3' diameter cylindrical vessel thought to be a steam accumulator; the remnants of three four-head stamp batteries; a double acting horizontal steam engine, complete with flywheel; two 12' diameter roasting kilns constructed of rubble masonry. There are several smaller adits driven in a westerly direction into the spur from the opposite slope. Another small battery site is found some distance upstream./n
Heritage Inventory Significance: State. The site is relatively intact and is representative of the small scale operations in this area. It contains extant machinery dating from 1868 and two of the most intact roasting kilns in this part of Gippsland and perhaps the state.
Heritage Inventory Site Features: Mine workings.Machinery site.
