House, 3325 Charlton-St Arnaud Road, SLATY CREEK - Physical Description 1
The house, 3325 Charlton-St Arnaud Road, Slaty Creek, is set on a large allotment. There is a substantial front setback with open grassed areas, perimeter garden beds and trees.
The symmetrical, single storey, stuccoed, transitional Late Victorian and Federation styled house is characterised by a steeply pitched gambrel roof form, together with an encircling bullnosed verandah punctuated by a central gable entrance portico. These roof forms are clad in lapped galvanised corrugated iron. An early elongated and stuccoed chimney with terra cotta pots adorn the roofline. Modest overhangs are features of the eaves.
An early feature of the design is the paired timber verandah columns supported by low, stuccoed piers. These columns are adorned with early cast iron brackets. The flying central verandah gable is supported by early timber brackets.
Other early features of the design include the timber framed double hung windows, central timber framed doorway with panelled timber door, sidelights and highlights, decorative window leadlighting, and the ridge decoration (part of which is missing).
This house is one of three similarly designed transitional Late Victorian and Federation styled houses located off the Charlton St. Arnaud Road at Slaty Creek. It is also appears to be a derivation of the particular "Charlton style" of housing, whereby a broad gambrel roof form characterises a number of the late 19th and early 20th century houses at Charlton.
