House, 3457 Charlton-St Arnaud Road, SLATY CREEK - Physical Description 1
The house, 3457 Carlton-St Arnaud Road, Slaty Creek, is set on a large allotment and its elevated positioning suggests that it has been relocated to this site. The front has a recently laid out garden with perimeter garden beds and mulched open space.
The symmetrical, single storey, horizontal timber weatherboard, transitional Late Victorian and Federation styled house is characterised by a steeply pitched gambrel roof form, together with an encircling bullnosed verandah punctuated by a central gable entrance portico. These roof forms are clad in green painted galvanised corrugated iron. Two introduced symmetrical and elongated face brick chimneys adorn the roofline. Modest overhangs and paired timber brackets are features of the eaves.
The turned timber verandah columns and decorative cast iron brackets and valances also appear to have been introduced but are appropriate. These columns are adorned with early cast iron brackets. The flying central verandah gable is supported by early timber brackets.
Other early features of the design include the timber framed double hung windows, central timber framed doorway with panelled timber door, sidelights and highlights, and the ridge decoration.
This house is one of three similarly designed transitional Late Victorian and Federation styled houses located off the Charlton St. Arnaud Road at Slaty Creek. It is also appears to be a derivation of the particular "Charlton style" of housing, whereby a broad gambrel roof form characterises a number of the late 19th and early 20th century houses at Charlton.
