St. Matthews Uniting Church Manse, 9-13 Scallan Street, STAWELL - Physical Description 1
The former Presbyterian Church Manse, 9 Scallan Street, Stawell, is set on a typical residential allotment for the area, and has a substantial front setback to Scallan Street. The front garden is largely characterised by open lawn areas with perimeter garden beds, concrete paths and driveway. The front is bound by a low, introduced face cream brick fence with dark brick cappings, together with open steel pedestrian and vehicular gates.
The asymmetrical, single storey, face brick, late Federation styled house is characterised by complex gambrel, hipped and gabled roof forms clad in galvanised corrugated iron. Two early and elongated face brick chimneys with rendered tops adorn the roofline. Broad overhangs are features of the eaves.
An early feature of the design is the corner porch with its broken back and gabled roof form clad in galvanised corrugated iron. It is supported by early, paired turned timber posts with decorative arched timber fretwork valances, and diagonal fretwork between the posts. The projecting gable has early decorative infill (timber battening and stucco panelling).
The front timber framed doorway with sidelights also appears to be early, as are the arched narrow windows under the porch. The other timber framed double hung windows, including the tripartite windows in the gable ends, are also early.
Other early decorative features of the design include the open timber gable fretwork, and the gable ventilators.
