Synagogue - Physical Description 2
The foundation stone of the Synagogue was laid on 25 January 1861 and the brick building, designed by T.B.Cameron was opened on 18 March 1861. 1861. for a cost of £900.
At a later date the two wings were added and the original face brickwork rendered (see pbotograph.H20S14, 1861 attached) . This may have been undertaken in 1886 when T.B.Cameron called for tenders for a new Synagogue or when renovations were carried out in 1903. The Synagogue was restored in 1961.
This building follows the pattern of old European Orthodox Synagogues which 'are distinctly different from the modern and more liberal Temples.
The building is constructed of brick and originally had only the pilasters pediment, window reveals and cornice rendeie4. Sadly all' the 'face brickwork .has now been rendered.
The building takes the form of a single rectangle with a portico supported on pairs of squared Tuscan column and pilasters. Hebrew lettering in the tympanum has a mysterious cipher-like quality and contributes to the building's intrigue. The portfolio and main building are roofed in slate Corner pilasters at the front support ad deep cornice. Elegant round headed sash windows, flanked by pilasters, complete the remainder of the building exterior.
Two small wings have been added on either side of the facade. These additions repeat the cornice pattern and continue a moulding incorporated beneath the front windows. Round headed openings to doors and windows match the original building. The additions, albeit sympathetic detract from the original simplicity of the building, as evidenced in the early, photo.
Internally the Synagogue has an upper gallery surrounded by cast iron decoration. Of note also are two silver plate candelabra crystal chandeliers dating from the 1860's.
This Synagogue is intact, and as a result of recent restoration, in good condition. Its uniqueness in Ballarat amply justifies its inclusion on the Historic Buildings Register
