Statement of Significance
Statement of Significance as recorded under the Queenscliff Heritage Study 2009
Captain Bowers Cottage, constructed in the 1870s, is of historical and architectural significance to the Borough of Queenscliffe. It is of historical significance for its association with Captain George Bower of the pilot's service; and as one of a number of surviving former pilots' houses in this area of Queenscliff which had been associated with pilot's houses since 1853. Captain Bowers Cottage, 1 St Andrews Street, Queenscliff - Physical Description 1
Extract from the 2009 study
Captain Bowers Cottage is a single-storey weatherboard 1870s house with an asymmetrical plan, and intersecting gable roofs to each bay. It has no setback to the street. The dwelling includes an elevated verandah, carried on timber posts (non-original), which extends from the projecting gabled bay across the front of the house, and includes a corrugated sheet metal balustrade. The roof to the main building is clad in corrugated steel, with decorative timber finials to each gable (added later) and a rendered chimney with stone cornice.
The window opening to the verandah is a timber-framed multi-pane casement, while that to the gable is a timber-framed double-hung sash window, possibly indicating that the gabled bay to the street was added later. The entrance door is located under the verandah, at the junction with the projecting the gabled bay.
The building allegedly contains elements from the earlier pilot's cottage which fronted Gellibrand Street and was demolished in order to erect Warraine, however this has not been confirmed.
Several other non-original additions have been made to the rear (east) of the building. A garage has been added to south side of the house, setback from the road behind the building line. A link between the original house and the garage extension is clad in unpainted corrugated metal sheet.
