SWAN SPIT PILE LIGHTHOUSE - History
Contextual History:History of Place:
Heritage Inventory History of Site:
The Omeo (Jackass Barque) collided with Swan Spit Pile Light on the 14th September 1881. The Omeo served on various routes from the late 1870s. IN 1880 she was acquired by the Howard Smith Co., who ran a coal trade for 12 months and then converted the ship into a sailing vessed rigged as a Jackass barque. Returning from Newcastle with a cargo of coal, anchored off Queenscliff (13.11.1881). The next day, she proceeded up the Bay, and while endeavouring to enter the West Channel with a flood tide, the Omeo missed stays and collided with the Swan Spit Lighthouse (which was wooden). It was hard to locate the position of the lighthouse which had for many years denoted the channel entrance. The Omeo received only minor damage and and continued her voyage.Heritage Inventory Description
