FORMER GARDINERVILLE HOMESTEAD - History
John Gardiner established the 15,000 acre Mooroolbark Run in January 1838 within this site. Gardiner secured a license for the run that same year. Gardiner did not live on the site until 1842. In 1843, Gardiner built a 2 storey stone house, named Kangaroo Park, adjacent to the Yarra River.
Gardiner sold the property in 1853 and returned to England.
FORMER GARDINERVILLE HOMESTEAD - Interpretation of Site
The sites consists of a disturbed scatter of fragmented artefacts. The artefacts indicate that the site may have also had a residential dwelling within the 'Kangaroo Park' property.
See site cards for various owners/leasees of the land following the sale by Gardiner.
FORMER GARDINERVILLE HOMESTEAD - Archaeological Significance
The site may relate to the earliest house on the Kangaroo Park property, and the earliest residence in the Yarra Valley. The current land owner believes that a ealier cottage burnt down (prior to owning the land) and the existing cottage, is now on that site.
FORMER GARDINERVILLE HOMESTEAD - Historical Significance
The site is significant for its association with its first owner, John Gardiner. Gardiner, along with John Hepburn and Joseph Hawdon, drove 400 head of cattle overland from Sydney to Melbourne. The expedition earned Gardiner the nickname "The Overlander". Gardiner had several roads and water crossings named after him in Melbourne, including: Gardiner's Crossing (later renamed Dight's Falls); Gardiner's Road (later renamed Toorak Road); Gardiner's Creek (later renamed Kooyong Koot Creek); and a shire - Gardiner Road Board and Shire of Gardiner (later renamed Shire of Malvern).
