BASIN HUT SAWMILLS SITE - History
THE BASIN HUT SITE FEATURED A SUITABLE TIMBER SUPPLY, LOGGING SLOPE, WATER SUPPLY, AN OUTLET ROUTE, AND A MARKET WITHIN REASONABLE DISTANCE. CONSEQUENTLY, A NUMBER OF MILLS OPERATED CONSECUTIVELY ON THE SITE, INCLUDING: SAMUEL COLLINS & COMPANY (1867), THOMAS CLAPPERTON (1872-1874/5), GEORGE EMERY (1886-1887), MARYBOROUGH DISTRICT CO-OPERATIVE COOL STORES (1922-1923), JAMES EMERY (1924?).BASIN HUT SAWMILLS SITE - Interpretation of Site
Earthworks from two sawmills identified about 50 metres apart. The easterly trench is 5.7 metres long and suitable to take the foundations for a spot mill. The second site consists of a 3 metre by 3 metre pit for a vertical breaking down saw with a 26 metre sawdust trench leading from it to the Avoca River bank.
