HISTORY
A request was made by Mr Harry Larnach to the Coburg Council in November 1916 to erect a fountain at Pascoe Vale as a memorial to soldiers. Harry Larnach operated a grocery store at 40 Prospect Street from 1895 until just before the Second World War, combining it with the Pascoe Vale Post Office from 1914 until 1929. His son, Lieutenant Leslie Larnach, was killed on active service in France on August 10th 1918. A tree, one of over 160, was planted in his honour at Lake Reserve in November 1919.
TheNLA's Troverecords aBrunswick and Coburg Leader article dated Friday 5 October 1917 announcing 'Tomorrow, Saturday at 3pm that the Mayor of Coburg (Cr. A. Bush) will unveil the memorial fountain in Pascoe Vale, to the soldiers in the district who have fallen.' There is another dated Friday12 October 1917 about the unveiling of the Memorial. The 'handsome drinking fountain' was unveiled Saturday (6th October 1917) by Mayor of Coburg (Cr. Alfred Bush), who 'expressed his feelings of pleasure at being invited to perform the ceremony and sorrow at its necessity'. He also congratulated the people of Pascoe Vale for 'furnishing the rest of Coburg with an example in the way of erecting a handsome and substantial memorial to those who had volunteered in the district.'
A site was selected on the south-east corner of Pleasant and Gyles Street, just outside the Holy Trinity Church and the memorial was erected.
The transfer of the memorial from Pleasant Street to Rogers Reserve c.1948 demonstrated the increased need of the community to commemorate its fallen after the Second World War. A plaque has also been added for the fallen of Korea, Malaya, Borneo and Vietnam.
Rogers Reserve was named for Cr Harry Malcolmson Rogers - possibly after his untimely death (of pneumonia) in September 1933. It is one of only four memorials of this type in Victoria, the others being located in Gisborne, Mordialloc and St Kilda.
