Veterans Description for Public
Somerton Armament Depot - Veterans Description for Public
The Somerton Armament Depot was built on 250 acres of land compulsorily acquired on January 12th 1944, for £4,834. On November 14th 1950, it wastransferred from the army to the navy for the use as Naval magazines.
The extent of mobilisation of the Second World War meant that storage facilities were needed for all branches of the service and for all types of products. General storage was typically in corrugated iron clad buildings. Some specialist facilities, such as magazines and ammunition stores, may have differed from this pattern.
The manufacture and storage of explosives was greatly expanded during the war. As a general rule buildings before 1942 are in brick and after that time in concrete, timber, corrugated iron and asbestos.
