Longlea Explosives Storage - Veterans Description for Public
The Longlea Explosives Storage was built on a site compulsorily acquired January 27th 1944. The Second World War was a period of huge expansion for defence industries as Australia geared up for 'total war'. New factories and facilities were constructed as part of the munitions effort but the pre-war trend of locating nearly all defence industries in Victoria was actually reversed and the majority of new factories of this time were built in other states. There were, of course, many additions to existing facilities and scores of private firms turned over almost their entire production to war work for a few years. As a general rule buildings before 1942 are in brick and after that time in concrete, timber, corrugated iron and asbestos.
