Hattah -Kulkyne Military Internment Camp - Veterans Description for Public
It is believed there was a camp for Italian prisoners of war at Hattah -Kulkyne during the Second World War and that they may have worked for the Forestry Commission. There is no documentary evidence of prisoners of war in the Hattah- Kulkyne area, however local sources indicate that there was a camp for Italian prisoners of war at Chalka Creek, and that the bridge on Chalka Creek and the sunken log barge in the Murray River provide evidence of their work, probably for the Forestry Commission of the foundation posts still remaining (small wooden post tops, cut level) forming straight rows. One building has the remains of a fireplace; the other has the remains of two fireplaces. The year '1942' is inscribed on one of the bricks. There is also an area of scattered debris and a few posts.
