Statement of Significance
Local grazier Finlay Rathjen believes it is the ruin of the first brick dwelling constructed in the Colbinabbin district, dating back to c1870.

WENDELL'S HOUSE - History
THE RATHJEB FAMILY HAVE LIVED IN THE COLNIBABBIN DISTRICT SINCE 1858. MR FINLAY RATHJEN IS THE ELDEST MEMBER. HE STATED THAT THE RUINS ARE OF A HOUSE BUILT BY THE WENDEL FAMILY IN THE 1870S. THE WENDELLS SETTLED THE AREA, TOGETHER WITH THE RATHJENS AFTER THE BENDIGO GOLD RUSH IN 1854.
WENDELL'S HOUSE - Interpretation of Site
The Rathjen family have lived in the Colbinabbin district since 1858. Mr Finlay Rathjen is the eldest member. He stated that the ruins are of a house built by the Wendell family in the 1870s. The Wendells settled the area, together with the Rathjens after the Bendigo gold-rush in 1854.

WENDELL'S HOUSE - Heritage Inventory Description
Ruin of a small cottage built from manufactured orange bricks. Features 4m high chimney stack with intact fireplace. South of stack are brick-lined depressions representing foundations and brick mounds nearby. Site is 30x30m and is located at the foot of "Heath's Hill". Peppercorns and very old pines around the site.
Chimney stack with arched fireplace, house foundations, brick mounds, old trees.
Physical Conditions:
Chimney stack and fireplace are in good condition. Rest is ruin.
