Statement of Significance
Regionally significant as tramway largely responsible for the cleared and grassed escarpment of the northern fall of the Strzlecki near Yarragon today.

SOUTH GIPPSLAND SAWMILL AND TRAMWAY CO - History
THE SOUTH GIPPSLAND SAWMILL AND TRAMWAY COMPANY WAS REGISTERED IN 1882 WITH A SMALL STEAM SWMILL AT THE FOOT OF THE ESCARPMENT SOUTH OF YARRAGON AND 1.5KM OF LOG TRAMWAY BEHIND THE MILL. A SECOND MILL WAS ESTABLISHED ON THE TOP OF THE RANGE BY 1883. THE COMPANY WAS WOUND UP IN 1886. THE SAWMILL AND TRAMWAY WERE PURCHASED BY MILLER BROTHERS & CO, BUT THE MILL WAS FORCED BY ECONOMIC CONDITIONS TO CLOSE IN 1889. THE TRAMWAY REMAINED IN PARTIAL USE BY SELECTORS UNTIL 1897.SOUTH GIPPSLAND SAWMILL AND TRAMWAY CO - Interpretation of Site
The tramway formation linked a sawmill of the south Gippsland sawmill and tramway company at the top of the escarpment with another mill at the bottom. Another tramway linked this lower mill to the railway station at Yarragon.

Tramway formation approximately 2km long extending from the bottom of the escarpment south of Yarragon to near the summit.
