Slaty Creek Memorial Hall - Veterans Description for Public
The Slaty Creek Memorial Hall, off the Slaty Creek St. Arnaud Road, was built in 1958 to commemorate the fallen soldiers in the Second World War. On September 23rd 1958, the St. Arnaud Mercury newspaper reported:
"Slaty Creek's new Memorial hall was officially opened at a gala ball on Friday evening, by the Minister for Lands, Mr. Keith Turnbull, M.L.A., in the presence of a crowd of about 350 people, who taxed the hall accommodation to its utmost. Mr. Turnbull also unveiled an honour roll, carrying the names of district residents, who had served during the 1939-45 World War. It was one of the biggest nights old residents of the district could recall. It was devoted to dancing, which did not conclude until about 3 a.m. The new hall is situated on the exact spot of the old Slaty Creek School, on a low rise of the opposite side of the Charlton road to the old hall site.
Built of cement bricks, made on a voluntary basis by district residents, the hall was subject of many compliments on Friday night, especially by several former residents of the district who returned for the big occasion. The building was erected at a cost of about £2,700, excluding voluntary labour. A grant of £1,120 was made available by the Government through the Kara Kara Shire Council for the building, on which there is still a debt of a few hundred pounds. The brickwork of the hall was erected by Mr. Ken Higgins of St. Arnaud, the carpentry work was carried out by Mr. F. Cadzow, the plumbing by Mr. E. Wood, the electrical installations by Mr. B. Kershaw, and the plaster work by Robinson and Casey, St. Arnaud."
