WEST CHICORY KILN - History
This allotment is shown to have been purchased by J West. Solomon West (brother) built his house on allotment 101. As John West was the first to establish the chicory industry on Phillip Island this kiln is likely to be one of the earlier structures on the island.WEST CHICORY KILN - Interpretation of Site
Kiln was established by Solomon and John West. John West was the first to establish chicory industry on the island. One of several kilns established on Phillip Island between 1870-1890s. This one belongs to the most prominent member of chicory industry kiln was probably built early 1870s.
