CHINESE BRICK KILN & MARKET GARDEN SITE - History
The kiln, believed to be only known example of a Chinese industrial kiln outside of China, dates from approximately1859. The kiln commenced operation inapproximately 1860 and was likely involved in the production of bricks for both commercial and domestic use. The kiln displays many characteristics that suggest it was built by Chinese potters and not Europeans. The area where the kiln was found was historically known as the Ironbark Chinese Camp and was occupied by the Chinese community from the 1850s, when they arrived in Bendigo in search of gold up until the 1960s. It is believed the area was also used for Chinese market gardens. Other artefacts have been uncovered at the site including Chinese ceramic rice wine bottles and pots used for storing food and oils, dating back to the late 1800s.
