Grattan Gardens - Physical Description 1
The reserve formerly had a layout of curved paths enclosed by extensive flower bedding displays and scattered trees. Most of these landscape features had been erased from the site by the 1950s. The early character of the gardens has been further overridden by extensive landscaping works carried out in recent decades. The rotunda is one of the few readily identifiable nineteenth century elements remaining but it has been moved on two occasions and has lost some original fabric. It was relocated to the southern end of the gardens in the late 1980s where it was rebuilt on a tall red-brick plinth, without the original balustrade. The rotunda has since been moved back to the northern end of the gardens and rebuilt on a concrete plinth. The c1911 gates on Izett Street survive but the associated stone and iron palisade boundary fence has been removed. The gates are wrought iron with ornate rendered masonry piers. The Gardens contain a number of trees that likely date from the early 20th century and are visible on early views such as the Plane Trees, or are conspicuous as mature specimens on the c.1950-1960 aerial view - a Canary Island Palm (Phoenix canariensis) at the Greville Street entry and the Lemon Scented Gum in the northern portion of the site. A row of Peppercorns along the east boundary near the Greville Street frontage (Schinus areira) are also likely to date from the early 20th century. Extensive plantings have been undertaken in recent decades, including Brush Box (Lophostemon confertus) and White Cedar (Melia azedarach) and a notable cluster planting of Mexican Cotton Palms (Washingtonia robusta) in the north of the site. Whilst contributing to the amenity of the Gardens, these later plantings are not considered to contribute to the heritage significance of the place.
