Statement of Significance
STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
An unusual interesting and early Modem house built in the 1920s. It is architecturally significant locally as a fine and intact surviving example ofthe early Modem style. It is historically significant locally as an embodiment of a particular way of life in Newtown between the wars and perhaps of the aspirations of its owner. Also probably as an early and pioneering example of this style here.
INTACTNESS: Wall surface have been painted. The roof is clad in flat tiles, which may be recent.
CONDITIONS & THREATS: Excellent.

Residence - Physical Description 1
DESCRIPTION:
A double fronted, low pitch hiproofed, rendered brick (?) modern house. The right bay is set forward as a deep porch, this is supported on a pair of large rectangular piers with Cubist decorated tops, reminiscent of the work of Walter Burley Griffin active in (Australia 1914-35). The balustrade is stepped, with symmetrical volumes including a window box. Window sashes have four panes and the entrance door is central with sidelights, eaves are deep and walls have roughcast. The fence also Modem, rendered with elegant wrought iron gates, with elegant ("d6") symmetrical curlicew decoration at its base. A mature Maple (Acer) may be contemporary with the house.
COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS
No 15 (ref: 16) has a similar plan and form and date to no 17 (ref: 18) but in a different architectural style. If the house was built in the 1920's it could be a particularly early example of the style in Geelong.
