OAKLANDS ROAD HOMESTEAD - History
Place history is currently unknown. The structure appears on a map of the area from 1938 (Sunbury, 1 :63 ,360; Australian Section, Imperial General Staff - see attached). The structure is not indicated on a similar map of 1916 (Sunbury, 1 :63, 360; Great Britain. War Office. General Staff. Commonwealth Section - see attached). Therefore, the homestead was likely built sometime after 1916, and by 1938.
OAKLANDS ROAD HOMESTEAD - Interpretation of Site
The site appears to be a domestic homestead on a pastoral/agricultural property. Dated after 1916, the structure was extant by 1938. Currently there are no known associations with local settlers in the region. It is possible that an earlier structure was on the property, closer to Oaklands Road (see the 1916 map, attached), however, there is no evidence of this structure on the ground. The bricks of the extant homestead remains appear to be machine made. Further archaeological and historical investigation is required to provide sufficient interpretation for the site.
OAKLANDS ROAD HOMESTEAD - Archaeological Significance
The archaeological significance of the site is assessed as low. The integrity of the deposits may have been compromised by recent modifications/ reconstruction of the chimneys and partial walls. There is potential for archaeological deposits to exist within the internal floor area of the site and beneath a concrete slab that is present, as well as in the general external vicinity of the structure. Deposits are likely to relate to domestic use of the property in the early 20th Century.
Heritage Inventory Description
OAKLANDS ROAD HOMESTEAD - Heritage Inventory Description
Site comprises brick chimneys and partial walls (which appear to have been reconstructed in recent years) with remnant floor (partially covered with concrete slab). Native & exotic vegetation, including pine trees, are in the vicinity of the structure. While it appears there has been modification to the remains of the structure, it is possible archaeological deposits are present beneath the floor, concrete slab and around the outer perimeter of the structure. The site dates to c.1938, as it is marked on a map of that date (see attached).
