STONE BUILDING - History
This stone building is located on part of lot I of section 4 in the Parish of Sedgwick that was granted by the Crown in a parcel that included allotments I A and 4, to Patrick McEncroe on the 23rd September 1880.[7] In total, the grant covered an area of over 100 acres, and McEncroe established a farm there. By February 1887, McEncroe had sold the entire parcel of land to his relative (and probably brother) John McEncroe.[8]
John McEncroe took out a series of mortgages between the time of his acquisition of the property and his death in 1905.[9] The mortgages were likely to have been a means of financing development of the land, and it is likely that most of the const'ruction on the property, including this stone building, took place during this time, Thomas McEncroe and Patrick McEncroe became the proprietors of the property following the death of John McEncroe (presumably their father) through the auspices of his will. They held the property for a number of years, and continued to run it as a farm until they sold to Michael Noonan on the 23rd August 1920.[ I 0] Noonan was also a farmer, and the acquisition of the McEncroe land brought his total holding to well over 400 acres of land. Noonan owned the property until his death in 1946, after which time the entirety of his holding was passed to John Noonan.[ I I] Part of his land was resumed by the Shire of Strathfieldsaye for the purposes of establishing a road in 1948, but Noonan remained the proprietor of the holding until his death in 1977.
