FORMER UNION INN SITE - History
In 1849 the Union Inn was built in the south west corner of the study area, on the Corner of Malop and Claire Street. The Inn may have been built on land leased from the Crown during this time. There were a number of outbuildings associated with the otel, likely a stable. The hotel had 20 rooms and was described as "first class accommodation for families with livery and bait stables, serving genuine wines and spirits of the best quality" (Geelong & District Family History online).
According to a 1912 plan, asignificant amount of development occurred since the 1850s. The entire frontage in Malop Street has been developed. The Union Club Hotel in the south east corner has increased in size. There is a large structure behind the hotel along Clare Street that takes up most of the central part of the study area. And two structures have been built on the corner of Clare Street and Corio Street.
By the 1930s, Carlton United Brewery (CUB) advertised for Geelong designers and builders to develop a new Hotel on the site, the Carlton Hotel. The Carlton was built in 1937 and was regarded as 'a mark of faith' in Geelong's prosperity (VHD online, 2017). The rear of the building was designed by N.E. Schefferle.
The hotel was a three storey structure built on a steel frame with light concrete floors. It includes 43 rooms and a large cellar (City of Geelong Conservation study). The opening of the Hotel was a well celebrated event, reflecting the city's progress (Geelong Advertiser, 4 February 1937).
Local references have indicated a number of buildings once stood within the Carlton Hotel car park and bottle shop including (Sports TG online, 2017; Mahlstedt Plan 1933 Figure 10):Geelong Try Boys Brigade (galvanized iron shed) (c. late 1890s);Hodges Brothers Brewery (at the rear of the London Bank);Former Geelong Advertiser offices (vacant laneway entering car park from Malop Street);Winter & Taylor Motor show rooms and workshop (present by 1933); andRay's Rent A Car & Garage (present by 1926).
