Statement of Significance
What is significant?
An individual Chinese Hawthorn located in the Warrnambool Botanic Gardens.
How is it significant?
This Chinese Hawthorn is significant for scientific, landscape and historic reasons at the State level.
Why is it significant?
The Chinese Hawthorn tree is scientifically significant for its rare large size with a spectacularly wide spreading canopy. Furthermore, it is an outstanding example of the species with a dense crown (which is unusual for a mature specimen). The tree is also significant for its contribution to the landscape and is visually impressive when in flower. The tree is historically significant for being a part of the arboricultural collection in the historic Warrnambool Botanic Gardens. This is the only remaining Chinese Hawthorn out of six original plantings.
