STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
The 'Avalon Homestead' was erected in 1880 for James Austin, replacing an earlier structure destroyed by fire in 1878. This single storey basalt homestead with freestone dressing was designed by prominent Geelong Architect Alexander Davidson in the characteristic picturesque gothic tradition and is one of his most notable later works. 'Avalon' derives from Arthurian legend and Glastonbury Abbey in England, another Austin property. The property remained in the ownership of the Austin family until 1949 and has significant links with the history of this important Victorian pioneering family.
