FORMER HOVELL PILE (SOUTH CHANNEL UNIDENTIFIED DROMANA) - History
The site was discovered in June 2005by P. Taylor et. al. and reported to Heritage victoria. It was initially believed to be a shipwreck and was registered as "South Channel Unidentified (Lightship) Dromana" and allocated Reg. Number 5894.
The site was recorded and excavated by Cosmos Archaeology in early 2008. The remains of the Former Hovell Pile Light were removed on the 2nd of June 2008due to possible damage fromthe Port of Melbourne Channel Deepening Project. It was re-deposited in a different location (3/6/2008)to be later buried by dredge spoil.

Site is likely to be the remains of an early Hovell PIle Light, wrecked in a storm in 1938.

Timber frames, piles, inner and outer planking, timber platform, and four acetylene gas cylinders create a small mound about 2m high (that is, above the surrounding sea bed). A copper alloy lantern and prism glass were at the site but have since been removed by Heritage Victoria for conservation treatment. A copper alloy chimney was stolen from the site some time in 2005-6.
