TERRACE HOUSES - Physical Description 1
216 to 222 Barkly Street are 2 pairs of almost identical brick two storey terrace houses, built of polychromatic brick, and exhibiting identical detailing, appearing remarkably original and intact in all visible characteristics, including verandah posts, lace, tiling, and door and window treatments. The only external differences are found in the size of the widths of the houses and thus the configuration of the facades. Houses at number 220 and 222 (originally numbered 82 and 80 respectively) were the first pair of houses to be constructed (in 1886) and are slightly wider, and thus feature double windows facing Barkly Street and a front door with side lights, afforded by the greater width. Houses at numbers 218 and 216 (originally numbered 86 and 88 respectively) were built between 1888 and 1891, have a narrower width, and so front doors have no sidelights, and there is only one window facing the street. The houses are in original and reasonable condition. There has been a gabled garage built on land to the east of number 220. Although this is in keeping with the period of the houses, it does not appear to be original and does not feature on the 1904 MMBW plan, nor in any of the rate notices to this date.
