Statement of Significance
The Steel Company of Australia Complex (former), comprising thebuildings constructed prior to 1960, at 14 Frith Street, Brunswick.
How is it Significant?
The Steel Company of Australia Ltd complex (former) is of local historicand aesthetic significance to the City of Moreland.
Why is it Significant?
Of historic significance as a representative and perhaps the most intactexample of Brunswick's once prolific steel foundry industry that becamea characteristic form of manufacture in the suburb during the late 19thand early 20th Centuries. (AHC Criterion B.2)
Of aesthetic significance as a good example of twentieth centuryindustrial architecture, which is of note for its use of coloured brickand curved curved forms on a corner site in the Streamlined Modernestyle. (AHC Criterion E.1)

STEEL COMPANY OF AUSTRALIA (FORMER) - Physical Description 1
The former Steel Company of Australia Ltd complex comprises a saw tooth and gabled factory-warehouse with an ornate bichrome brick facade around the corner entrance featuring horizontal bands of cream and manganese bricks, a scalloped parapet with vertical stripes of brown bricks over the doorway which is surrounded by white painted rendered pillars and lintel. A rendered string course extends across the tops of the windows. The remainder of the exterior walls are plain red brick. A long single gabled building with roof ridge ventilation to the south of the main building has the typical form of a casting shop with exterior wall height to provide headroom for overhead travelling cranes used in the handling of molten metal.

Adjacent to the Sydney Road commercial strip but on the more residential east side.
